Speculation Surrounds Bitcoin and Ethereum in GTA 6, But Confirmation Still Pending

Rumors surrounding the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6 incorporating cryptocurrency have been circulating for over a year and are resurfacing. A Crypto Twitter influencer known as Gordon, inspired by Gordon Gekko from the movie “Wall Street,” recently informed his nearly 500,000 followers that GTA 6 would support cryptocurrency payments, specifically mentioning Bitcoin, Ethereum, and USDT.

Despite the ongoing speculation, there has been no official confirmation regarding the integration of cryptocurrencies into Grand Theft Auto 6 from Rockstar Games or its parent company, Take-Two. Official trailers and announcements have not made any references to cryptocurrency inclusion.

A tweet by Gordon, which included a fabricated game trailer, quickly gained traction, amassing over 500,000 views within hours. When questioned about the source of his information, Gordon humorously claimed that his “uncle works there” or dismissed previous reports as outdated.

However, the reality remains unchanged from previous reports by Decrypt’s GG in May 2023 and the initial leaked official trailer from last December, which featured the phrase “BUY BTC.” Decrypt’s GG reached out to Rockstar Games for comment but received no immediate response.

While the possibility of Grand Theft Auto 6 incorporating a crypto element upon its expected 2025 release exists, it remains speculative. Take-Two Interactive’s acquisition of Zynga in 2022 hinted at exploring “Web3 opportunities,” with Zynga launching its first blockchain game, Sugartown, on Ethereum. Rockstar Games previously prohibited cryptocurrency and NFTs on player-operated Grand Theft Auto 5 servers in response to the growing use of NFTs for in-game assets.

Given Grand Theft Auto’s satirical nature, it is more likely to satirize cryptocurrencies and NFT enthusiasts rather than launch its own on-chain currency. The topic of cryptocurrency in GTA 6 is anticipated to generate ongoing discussion leading up to the game’s release, slated for fall 2025.

While the potential for cryptocurrency integration in Grand Theft Auto 6 exists, Rockstar Games has neither confirmed nor denied such plans. The gaming industry’s adoption of cryptocurrency could witness a significant shift if GTA 6 were to incorporate such features.
