Bitcoin Creator Craig Wright Receives Assets Freezing Order in Libel Lawsuit
The United Kingdom’s High Court has taken action against Craig Wright, a self-proclaimed Bitcoin creator, by ordering the freezing of his assets due to a libel lawsuit. This legal move follows a request from podcaster Peter McCormack to recover legal fees incurred when Wright sued him for defamation. McCormack informed his social media followers that approximately 1.54 million British pounds ($1.9 million) of Wright’s assets have been frozen as part of this order.
Justice James Mellor, in his ruling, highlighted Wright’s misuse of defamation laws to silence those questioning his claim of being Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonymous Bitcoin creator. The court found McCormack’s case for recovering £1.548 million in legal costs to be strong. Despite Wright’s long-standing assertion of being Satoshi Nakamoto, a judge previously ruled in March against this claim, stating that there was substantial evidence proving otherwise.
The legal dispute arose when McCormack, host of the What Bitcoin Did podcast, labeled Wright as a “fraud” for his alleged identity as Satoshi Nakamoto. This incident sheds light on the complexities and controversies surrounding the origins and identities within the cryptocurrency space.
It is essential to stay informed about such developments in the crypto world to understand the legal, ethical, and reputational challenges faced by prominent figures like Craig Wright.
