UK Authorities Contemplate Charging Bitcoin Creator Craig Wright With Perjury and Forgery
UK Prosecutors To Consider Charging Self-Styled Bitcoin Creator Craig Wright With Perjury and Document Forgery
UK prosecutors are deliberating over potential charges against Craig Wright, the self-proclaimed originator of Bitcoin (BTC), for alleged perjury and document falsification related to his claim of being the mastermind behind the pioneering cryptocurrency.
In a legal battle initiated by the Crypto Open Patent Alliance (COPA) against Wright, the presiding judge in March stated that substantial evidence contradicts Wright’s assertion of being the author of the Bitcoin white paper.
A court document dated July 16th, authored by British High Court judge James Mellor, reaffirms the judge’s previous conclusion that Wright engaged in significant deception and document fabrication to substantiate his false assertion.
The document quotes, “All his lies and forged documents were in support of his biggest lie: his claim to be Satoshi Nakamoto.” Mellor further describes Wright’s actions as a severe abuse of the legal system in the UK, Norway, and the USA, stemming from his persistent false claim of being Satoshi.
Following COPA’s request, Mellor is now taking steps to refer the case documents to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), the body responsible for criminal prosecutions in England and Wales. The CPS will assess whether legal action against Wright for perjury and document forgery is warranted.
Mellor’s statement within the document reads, “I have no doubt that I should refer the relevant papers in this case to the CPS for consideration of whether a prosecution should be commenced against Dr. Wright for his wholescale perjury and forgery of documents and/or whether a warrant for his arrest should be issued and/or whether his extradition should be sought from wherever he now is.”
The potential legal repercussions facing Craig Wright underscore the ongoing legal saga surrounding his claims as the original creator of Bitcoin. The outcome of the CPS’s evaluation will determine the next steps in addressing the allegations of perjury and document forgery against Wright.
