Sony Advances Ethereum Layer-2 Blockchain with Testnet Launch and Developer Rewards

Sony Group’s blockchain subsidiary has recently introduced the “Minato” testnet for its Ethereum Layer-2 blockchain, Soneium, accompanied by an incubation program designed to attract developers. This move comes after the multinational conglomerate announced a joint venture with Web3 infrastructure provider Startale, forming Sony Block Solutions Labs.

The Minato testnet offers a development environment that replicates mainnet conditions to facilitate high-volume applications and promote blockchain adoption. Astar Network, recognized for its multi-chain capabilities, will contribute initial liquidity and a variety of digital assets to support the testnet phase.

While the association of a global household name with a blockchain network is expected to draw interest from developers and users, the success of the initiative remains to be seen. With 900 million Sony devices in use worldwide and a diverse range of entertainment offerings such as movies, TV shows, music, and the PlayStation Network, Sony boasts a significant global presence.

Following the testnet launch, Sony plans to launch Soneium Spark, a program tailored towards developers. This program will provide developers with access to infrastructure, mentorships, and industry partnerships, with the aim of stimulating interest and growth within the network. Preregistration for Spark is currently open, and applications are set to commence in the near future.

Over 50 projects have already started building or expressed interest in deploying on Soneium, according to Sota Watanabe, the founder of Astar Network and CEO of Startale. The goal is to establish a robust community of builders through the program.

Spark aims to facilitate potential collaborations and partnerships with industry enterprises in the realm of Web3. This could involve co-developing blockchain technologies, sharing innovations, or collaborating on decentralized applications. Developer participants will have access to exchanges, networking opportunities, and potential investments of up to $100,000 to develop on Minato, with additional funding opportunities through the program’s partner network.

In addition to the partner network, Circle, Optimism, Alchemy, The Graph, and Chainlink will provide expertise to support developers in their endeavors. The ultimate objective is to foster a vibrant and supportive ecosystem for builders within the Soneium network.
