New Blockchain RPC Service with Ethereum Compatibility Launched by Google Cloud

Google Cloud has introduced a new Ethereum-compatible Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service designed to streamline blockchain development processes and offer a reliable means of interacting with blockchain data. The announcement of this latest offering from Google Cloud on September 17 signifies a significant advancement in decentralized application (DApp) communication with blockchain networks, starting with support for the Ethereum mainnet and testnets. This service presents a cost-effective alternative for managing node infrastructure, allowing DApps to effectively communicate with blockchain data.

In the realm of blockchain technology, RPCs play a vital role by enabling one program to request services from another program situated on a different network. For DApps, RPCs are essential for interacting with blockchain data, facilitating tasks such as transaction validation, data retrieval, and node communication. However, the reliability of RPCs has been a persistent concern within the blockchain sector. Any delays or errors in RPCs can significantly impact the functionality of DApps, which often require instantaneous handling of transactions and data requests.

Instances of disruptions due to high network traffic or sudden spikes in transaction volumes have been observed in various blockchain platforms like ZkSync for Ethereum’s layer-2 solution, Solana, and Manta. These disruptions highlight the critical importance of reliable RPC services in ensuring the smooth operation of blockchain applications during peak demand periods.

Google Cloud’s Blockchain RPC service aims to address these challenges by leveraging its robust infrastructure to enhance reliability. Fully compatible with the JSON-RPC standard, this service allows Ethereum developers to seamlessly integrate it with their DApps by simply modifying their RPC endpoints. Additionally, the service offers a free tier that supports up to 100 requests per second and 1 million requests per day, catering to a wide range of applications from startups venturing into blockchain technology to large enterprises in need of dependable infrastructure.

Kyle Quintal, Head of Engineering at web3 analytics firm 0xArc, praised Google Cloud’s RPC service for its fast response times and adherence to the Ethereum Improvement Proposal 1474 standards, which influenced their decision to integrate it into their system. EIP-1474 defines a standardized set of RPC methods for Ethereum nodes, further enhancing the compatibility and functionality of the Blockchain RPC service.

Currently available globally in preview, Google Cloud plans to expand support for additional blockchains in the upcoming year. This initiative is part of Google Cloud’s broader commitment to the blockchain sector, as evidenced by its collaborations with various blockchain projects and platforms such as EigenLayer, Aptos, Flare, and Polygon.
