Bitcoin Expert: Man Who Accidentally Threw Away £569 Million Jackpot Could be Recovered
A regular guy who lost his Bitcoin fortune, which is now worth about £569 million, might have a chance to recover it without having to dig through a landfill, according to an expert. James Howells accidentally had his hard drive thrown out, which contained around 8,000 Bitcoin. His former partner disposed of it while clearing out his office, claiming he asked her to throw away his rubbish and the Bitcoin ended up in the bin bag.
Since realizing the mistake, Howells has been trying to convince Newport City Council to allow him to search for his hard drive in the landfill site where he believes it to be buried. The council has stated that excavating the site is not feasible due to environmental concerns. However, Howells has not given up hope.
Cryptocurrency expert Hadyn Jones suggested that if Howells still has the ‘seed phrase’ for his Bitcoin wallet, he may be able to recover the funds without physically retrieving the hard drive. The ‘key’ to the Bitcoin is on the hard drive, but the seed phrase could potentially provide access to the wallet. Without this information, it would be nearly impossible to access the lost Bitcoin.
Unfortunately, another expert mentioned that there may not even be a seed phrase, which would make it even more challenging for Howells to reclaim his lost fortune without the original hard drive. Despite the setbacks, it seems like exploring alternative recovery methods rather than digging through the landfill site may be a more promising avenue for Howells.
With the value of Bitcoin continuing to rise, it’s no wonder that Howells is eager to retrieve his lost fortune. It remains to be seen whether he will be able to unlock his Bitcoin treasure without physically locating the hard drive.
