Imagine accidentally throwing away a hard drive with £500m worth of bitcoin on it. That’s exactly what happened to James Howells from Newport, Wales back in 2013. His quest to find his lost fortune has now made its way to court.

Howells explains that during a summer clean-up, he mistakenly tossed his hard drive, containing his bitcoin wallet, into the rubbish. His partner, thinking it was trash, took it to the dump, where it has stayed ever since. Despite his efforts to enlist the help of Newport city council, his hard drive remains lost.

In a recent court session, lawyers argued that the search for the hard drive was not a hopeless case of finding a “needle in a haystack.” In fact, they claimed to have a “finely tuned” plan to pinpoint its location in a specific area. Howells remains determined to recover his lost bitcoin, even offering to share the wealth with the council.

While the council maintains that anything thrown into the landfill belongs to them, Howells and his legal team are pushing for a thorough search. They believe they have identified the exact location of the hard drive and are ready to excavate with the help of data recovery experts.

Despite facing challenges from the council, Howells remains hopeful. He has expressed his commitment to finding his lost fortune, emphasizing that he thinks about it every day. The court is yet to make a final decision on Howells’ case, but his determination to recover his bitcoin remains unwavering.
