Bitcoin Miner Buys 112-Megawatt Texas Wind Farm and Takes it Off the Grid

This week, a Florida-based company called MARA Holdings made an exciting announcement—they purchased a 114-megawatt Texas wind farm. But here’s the kicker: they plan to take it completely off the power grid and use it to power their Bitcoin mining operations. How cool is that?
Why did they do it? According to MARA’s CEO, they saw an opportunity to make the most of renewable resources that might otherwise go to waste. Plus, by integrating their operations vertically, they can actually save money on Bitcoin production costs. And on top of all that, they’re showing their commitment to being good stewards of the environment. Win-win-win!
But here’s the twist: the wind farm isn’t part of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas. Instead, it’s managed by the Southwest Power Pool, covering a big chunk of central U.S. territory. That 114-megawatt facility has the potential to power a bunch of homes—anywhere from 20,000 to 100,000, depending on who you ask.
Wind farms like this have a history of using up a lot of power and causing noise complaints from nearby residents. But in Texas, where cryptocurrency companies like to hang out, that hasn’t stopped businesses like MARA from making moves. Just a couple of weeks back, the Public Utilities Commission even introduced new rules for crypto miners within the ERCOT grid to keep an eye on their locations and energy use.
Speaking of energy use, did you know that crypto mining operations currently account for around 2.3% of U.S. electricity consumption? It takes a whopping 155,000 kilowatt-hours to mine just one Bitcoin. But MARA isn’t stopping there—they recently signed another off-grid power deal for a 25-megawatt micro data center powered by excess natural gas from oil production.
In a world where demand for electricity keeps growing—think artificial intelligence giants like Google and Amazon—Bitcoin miners like MARA are having to get creative. By tapping into wind power and only mining when the wind is blowing, they’re finding ways to stay competitive. Who knows, maybe more wind farms are in MARA’s future. The possibilities are endless!
