The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use in children ages 12 to 15. This decision comes after a clinical trial involving over 2,000 adolescents found the vaccine to be safe and effective in this age group.

According to the FDA, the vaccine was found to be 100% effective in preventing COVID-19 in adolescents aged 12 to 15. Additionally, the side effects were consistent with those seen in adults, including pain at the injection site, headache, fever, and fatigue. These side effects were generally mild to moderate in severity and resolved within a few days.

The Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine is already authorized for emergency use in individuals ages 16 and older. With this new approval for adolescents, more young people can now be protected against COVID-19, which is particularly important as schools and summer camps begin to reopen.

Experts are encouraging parents to have their children vaccinated to help protect them from COVID-19 and prevent the spread of the virus within the community. Vaccination is seen as a crucial step in returning to a sense of normalcy and putting an end to the pandemic.
