Bitcoin Price Decrease Due to Concerns Over US Government Selling Silk Road Stash
Bitcoin took a small hit, dropping around 3% on Thursday in response to reports that the US government may be gearing up to sell a significant amount of bitcoin confiscated from the Silk Road darknet marketplace. The price of Bitcoin stood at $93,540 (£76,198) on Thursday, according to CoinGecko data, with the total cryptocurrency market cap also experiencing a 3.3% decrease to $3.42tn.
Investors are feeling a bit jittery about the potential sale of the government’s bitcoin stash, which is estimated to be worth around $6.5bn. The US Department of Justice (DOJ) reportedly got the green light from the Northern District Court of California to liquidate 69,370 bitcoin after a lengthy legal battle over one of the largest cryptocurrency seizures in history.
The court ruling, delivered by chief US district judge Richard Seeborg, denied a motion to block the forfeiture of the assets, paving the way for the DOJ to move forward with the sale. However, the process of selling off such a large amount of assets typically involves several administrative steps to avoid major market disruptions.
This development comes at a crucial time, with the impending shift to Donald Trump’s administration, which is seen as more crypto-friendly. Traders are closely monitoring the government’s crypto wallet activity through the blockchain analytics platform Arkham Intelligence. If the bitcoin remains unsold before Trump takes office on January 20, many investors believe the sale may be halted.
While there are concerns that a massive sale of bitcoin could lead to market volatility, Bitget Research chief analyst Ryan Lee suggests that selling the bitcoins in phases could help the market absorb them more smoothly. It’s important to note that past government asset liquidations have been executed gradually to minimize market disturbances.
So, keep an eye on the market as these developments unfold, and remember to stay informed and cautious in the ever-evolving world of cryptocurrency. Happy investing!
