Bitcoin Core Maintainer Gloria Zhao recently shared insight about the significance of Bitcoin’s mempool in terms of promoting censorship-resistant money. Gloria’s journey began in 2020 when she started contributing to Bitcoin Core before completing her studies at UC Berkeley later that year. Opting to forego a full-time position at Google, she committed to working on Bitcoin Core with funding from Brink, alongside contributions from the Human Rights Foundation and Spiral. By 2022, Gloria assumed the role of a Bitcoin Core maintainer, a pivotal position that granted her commit permissions to introduce new code to the Bitcoin Core repository. Her elevation to this role coincided with Pieter Wiulle’s departure. Apart from maintaining her contributory role, Gloria endeavors to assist newer Bitcoin Core contributors by offering guidance and spearheading the Bitcoin Core PR Review Club in collaboration with Stéphan Vuylsteke, ensuring regular reviews of proposed codes for Bitcoin Core.

During our recent conversation at the MIT Bitcoin Expo in Boston, Gloria expounded on her primary area of focus within Bitcoin Core, the mempool. She emphasized the criticality of a decentralized and transparent mempool in fortifying Bitcoin’s resilience against censorship. In our dialogue, we delved into the significance of package relay in enhancing transaction efficiency and reliability by transmitting transactions in clusters across the network. Moreover, Gloria elucidated on the vital interplay between the mempool and Layer Two solutions, shedding light on the broader ecosystem dynamics.

By elucidating the mechanics of the mempool and its pivotal role in upholding Bitcoin’s foundational principles, Gloria underscored how the mempool serves as a linchpin for censorship resistance. The mempool acts as a decentralized repository of unconfirmed transactions awaiting verification from miners, ensuring robust network security while facilitating the seamless flow of transactions within the Bitcoin ecosystem. Its openness and decentralization underpin Bitcoin’s core ethos, enabling users to transact freely without the risk of external meddling or censorship.

Gloria’s work on package relay epitomizes her commitment to optimizing transaction processing efficiency within the Bitcoin network. By aggregating transactions into cohesive packets for dissemination across the network, Gloria’s efforts have streamlined fee optimization and bolstered transaction reliability, further fortifying the network’s operational resilience. This innovative approach not only enhances the user experience but also reinforces Bitcoin’s usability and scalability, positioning it as a robust store of value and medium of exchange in the digital economy.

In navigating the evolving landscape of blockchain technology and decentralized finance, Gloria’s steadfast dedication to advancing Bitcoin’s core infrastructure underscores the indispensable role of open-source development in fostering innovation and resilience within the cryptocurrency ecosystem. Through her collaboration with the Bitcoin Core PR Review Club and mentorship initiatives, Gloria empowers a new generation of developers to contribute meaningfully to Bitcoin’s growth and evolution. As Bitcoin continues to assert its dominance as a censorship-resistant monetary system, Gloria’s insights and contributions serve as a beacon of inspiration for the global community of blockchain enthusiasts and technologists.
